Your children’s oral health is important, and keeping teeth and gums healthy is crucial on so many levels. Recently, experts have discovered that children’s teeth might be able to help treat Parkinson’s disease and diabetes because of stem cells located in the pulp chambers of the teeth. Clearly, your child’s teeth are vitally important and the dental team at Atrium Family Dental in New Lenox, IL want to make sure your children’s oral health care is top notch.

Practicing proper oral health care

If you’re wondering when the right time is to start brushing your baby’s teeth, we have some tips for you.  Regular dental cleanings should be done after your baby has their teeth. After you have breastfed or bottle-fed your baby, take a damp washcloth and softly rub your baby’s gums. To make cleaning easier, you can wrap the cloth around one of your fingers to remove all those food scraps from your baby’s mouth.

Children’s Oral Health Care: Finding The Right Products

Is your child prone to cavities? The family dental professionals at Atrium Family Dental can help. Introducing proper oral health habits at an early age is important and using the right oral health care products is essential.

Preventing cavities starts with the type of toothbrush your child is using. Our family dental experts suggest picking a toothbrush with polished bristles that will be softer on your children’s gums. Most companies even make toothbrushes specifically designed for children’s small mouth and hands. In addition, look for a brush with a bigger handle so children can easily navigate the toothbrush. As soon as the bristles wear out on your child’s toothbrush, or after a three-month time period, be sure to buy a new one.

When it comes to toothpaste, make sure that fluoride is a main ingredient. However, it is crucial to teach your children to ALWAYS spit out toothpaste. Fluoride can be harmful to anyone, and if your child is prone to swallowing toothpaste, find a healthy alternative. It is a good idea to use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, and make sure that each tooth gets covered.
