Invisalign May Be Comfortable, But Does it Affect Speech?

Patient inserting Invisalign aligner

Invisalign became a popular choice for orthodontic treatment pretty much as soon as it hit the market. It’s not hard to see why – these clear aligners boast a comfortable straightening process, near-invisible aesthetics, and a removability feature that enables patients to stick to their regular diets.

Maybe you’re wondering what the “catch” is, or maybe you’re simply familiar with how mouthguards and other similar appliances fit in your mouth. Either way, there’s a big question on your mind: will Invisalign affect the way you talk? Keep reading to find out!

Short Answer: Your Speech Might be Temporarily Affected

It’s true that some patients experience challenges when trying to speak around their aligners. Even though Invisalign is incredibly thin, it will likely still feel foreign in your mouth, and you might have trouble enunciating “th,” “s,” and “z” sounds.

The good news is that Invisalign speech difficulties are often temporary! As you talk with your aligners more and more, you’ll get used to them and be able to pronounce words normally.

Longer Answer: There Are Ways You Can Practice Talking Normally

Not only will you adjust to your Invisalign, but you can also practice talking to improve your speech. Here are some tips for doing exactly that:

  • Read out loud. You don’t necessarily have to talk to someone in order to practice speech! Reading out loud is a great way to get a feel for how Invisalign sits in your mouth.
  • Record yourself talking. If you are the type of person to ramble, put your gift of gab to use. Playing back a recording of your own monologues can help you hear how you’re pronouncing those trickier sounds.
  • Speak slowly. This tip can be utilized while you’re practicing alone and if you’re trying to speak more clearly in the moment. Talking more slowly will make it easier to enunciate.

Overall, Invisalign is still the most comfortable way to straighten your teeth. With some practice and care, you’ll adjust to your clear aligners smoothly and quickly. If you do experience prolonged challenges, remember that your dentist would be happy to help! They want to promote a positive treatment and won’t hesitate to offer personalized advice.
