The first step towards a perfect smile is to be sure you have a healthy smile. This is the result of good oral hygiene and regular general dentistry treatments. At Atrium Family Dental in New Lenox, IL our patients work with Dr. Shane Sudman to ensure they have the healthiest smiles possible. This is done with regular exams and cleanings and any treatments that need to be performed to prevent or halt decay or damage.

Our general dentistry treatments include those exams and cleanings, but also fillings, root canals and any dental repairs. This may include the use of crowns, bonding, implants, dentures and more.

There are so many…which toothpaste should you buy?

Did you notice that the aisle in the store with toothpaste and tooth related products seems to be growing every year?  On average, we are bombarded with up to 750 marketing messages from brands each day. Every one of these brands are vying for our attention, approval, and convince us that their product is the one we need to buy. It can be immense. So how do we do choose? We can’t help you with what type of coffee to buy or what laundry detergent to use, but we can guide you on choosing the correct toothpaste.

The issue with a lot of these products is that they all are promising something different or in some cases promising everything!  With so many types, brands and flavors, we thought it would make sense to help some and break it down. Here are quick tips of what to look for when you are lost in the toothpaste selection process.

Red Wine Linked to Poor Oral Health

We understand that red wine can be excellent for your overall wellness– we’ve all heard it before. The thing is, it can be bad for your oral wellness.

Research launched by Dentistry Today mentions that the level of acidity in red wine discolors your teeth, which can escalate into major oral health issues. We understand liquor has a lot of sugars in it, but because of the high acidity in red wine, it can be even worse than other liquors, eating away at your tooth enamel.

Heart Disease Medication Shown to Reduce Gum Disease Inflammation

The Journal of the American College of Cardiology has recently published a study in which heart disease patients were given statins, a type of drug designed to lower cholesterol. The study found that while the statins in high dose reduced cholesterol, the medication also reduced gum inflammation in as little as 4 weeks of treatment.

What does this mean for oral health care, dentistry and medicine in general? For one, it further provides a link between oral health care and heart disease, as the researchers believe that treating gum disease and treating high cholesterol using the same medication may mean that you avoid the risks of gum disease and the risks of high cholesterol.
