So you’re a coffee lover who’s excited for National Coffee Day on September 29th. But what’s this about protecting your smile?

Depending on where you land on the “coffee addict” spectrum, your favorite brew could potentially be harming your teeth. And if you’re planning on celebrating this special day, you’re going to want to learn how you can enjoy your cup-of-joe in peace! Here’s everything you need to know about coffee and your dental health, plus some tips for keeping your pearly whites nice and bright.

The Good: Polyphenols

Don’t worry – you don’t need to be an expert chemist to understand how polyphenols can benefit your teeth. All you need to know is that 1) they’re found in coffee and 2) they can prevent bacteria from sticking to your teeth, prevent plaque from forming, and reduce gum inflammation. Polyphenols are so good for your dental health, in fact, that researchers are trying to find ways to use them in products like toothpaste.

Coffee can have some positive effects on your pearly whites, so you don’t have to “throw the java out with the bathwater.” Simply be mindful of how much and how frequently you’re consuming those pumpkin spice lattes!

The Bad: Acid Damage

Now on to the less feel-good facts about coffee. If you’ve ever tossed back a straight shot of espresso, you know just how bitter – and acidic – this drink can be. Unfortunately, acids have a habit of wearing down enamel. Exposing your smile to too many acidic beverages can result in permanent sensitivity and weakness to bacteria.

The Ugly: Dental Staining

Dental staining isn’t necessarily a health issue, per se, but it is an aesthetic annoyance. As a dark liquid with strong pigments, coffee can turn your teeth yellow pretty quickly. Especially if you’re drinking it every morning!

Enjoying National Coffee Day in Peace

You don’t want to have to think about acid damage and dental staining while trying to celebrate National Coffee Day, so here are some tips that can help you enjoy your favorite brew in peace:

  • Drink through a straw to minimize contact between the coffee and your pearly whites.
  • Take sips of water in between sips of coffee to help wash away acids and staining pigments.
  • Bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss with you so you can clean your teeth when you’re done with your java.
  • Snack on crunchy vegetables – the texture can also help keep your smile healthy and clean.

May these tips serve you and your friends well, and have a merry (and safe) National Coffee Day!
