Nighttime Oral Health

June 16, 2015

Most of us wake up in the morning and run to go brush our teeth.  Many experience undesirable morning breath and for this reason, brushing their teeth is their very first morning task.  However, when it comes to evening oral health care, people’s routines differ.  Some believe in brushing, flossing and/or rinsing right after dinner, while others wait until bed time.  Which one is truly best?

Firstly, we ask ourselves, why is evening oral hygiene important in the first place?  This is due to a lack of swallowing while we are asleep.  For this reason, bacteria has a tendency to build up overnight, often causing “morning breath.”

For years, researchers and physicians have been studying the joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis.  This disease affects thousands of Americans and is becoming increasingly common, especially amongst the older generations.

Poor oral health linked to rheumatoid arthritis

There have been several clinical studies conducted which show that poor oral health may be linked to rheumatoid arthritis.  This study shows that a particular enzyme may become present when a person is affected by gum disease.  This particular enzyme is harmful because it often results in the body converting some proteins into a different protein called: citrulline. The body frequently confuses this citrulline and even thinks that it will cause problems and attacks it as a result, as a sort of immune response. This produces heavy inflammation in patients who suffer from such autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or RA.

What Exactly Does Tooth Enamel Do?

Throughout your lives, dentists have told you that you need to take care of your teeth and protect them from the development of plaque and cavities. But did you know that our teeth have their own natural protection? From your New Lenox dentists, we’re here to tell you that the tooth enamel is a type of tissue that coats the exposed parts of a tooth and it is one of the toughest substances in a person’s body. The strength of the enamel comes from the many minerals that the tooth contains. Tooth enamel is also semi-translucent, meaning the coloration of the tooth comes from the dentin which is underneath the enamel. It coats the top crown of the tooth and serves as the primary defense of our teeth against bacteria.

However, the tooth enamel is not exactly invincible. The types of food we eat can affect the strength of the enamel. Tooth cavities dissolve and destroy enamel by stripping the minerals that make it strong. One of the primary causes of tooth cavities is the consumption of sugary foods and acids. Our Illinois dental practice warns against sugar because it feeds bacteria, and as bacteria work hard to propagate, they release acids, thus destroying enamel.
