{"id":1549,"date":"2015-06-16T06:34:31","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T13:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.atriumfamilydental.com\/?p=1549"},"modified":"2018-11-09T22:15:31","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T22:15:31","slug":"nighttime-oral-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.atriumfamilydental.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/16\/nighttime-oral-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Nighttime Oral Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of us wake up in the morning and run to go brush our teeth.\u00a0 Many experience undesirable morning breath and for this reason, brushing their teeth is their very first morning task.\u00a0 However, when it comes to evening oral health care, people\u2019s routines differ.\u00a0 Some believe in brushing, flossing and\/or rinsing right after dinner, while others wait until bed time.\u00a0 Which one is truly best?<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, we ask ourselves, why is evening oral hygiene important in the first place?\u00a0 This is due to a lack of swallowing while we are asleep.\u00a0 For this reason, bacteria has a tendency to build up overnight, often causing \u201cmorning breath.\u201d<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Best Practices for Nighttime Hygiene<\/h2>\n<p>Dental professionals recommend a 3 step routine to nighttime oral care.\u00a0 This includes thoroughly brushing (teeth, tongue and gums), flossing and rinsing with mouthwash.\u00a0 This is so that all food remains and particles are removed, as well as plaque build up.\u00a0 People who are at\u00a0 higher risk for gum disease (such as gingivitis) should perform this routine after dinner, versus waiting several\u00a0 hours until bedtime.<\/p>\n<p>Many people also experience mouth grinding at night.\u00a0 Although there are many different theories as to why this occurs (psychological reasons, stress, etc.) there is also a way to prevent it.\u00a0 Mouth guards are commonly used and recommended by dental professionals, to reduce teeth grinding.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of a long day, we all just want to relax and go to sleep.\u00a0 It is important that prior to do turning in for the night, we take care of our oral hygiene.\u00a0 This way, we can wake up with a smile!<\/p>\n<p>At Atrium Family Dental Dr Sudman will work with you on how to best implement the nightly routine.
